Trauma is the individual response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, causes feelings of helplessness, diminishes their sense of self and their ability to feel the full range of emotions and experiences.
Signs of having a post-traumatic stress response can include :
Having unwanted memories of the trauma (including nightmares).
Avoidance in your life of people, places or things that remind you of trauma.
Negative changes in how you think about yourself, others or the world.
Physical changes in your body including feeling on edge, difficulty sleeping, and trouble with memory.
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. EMDR can be used on one specific traumatic memory or multiple negative life experiences.
The process of EMDR involves remembering aspects of trauma and processing the trauma with a therapist in a very guided way so that our bodies can feel safe in the present moment. Many people find it helpful if their trauma has lead to core negative beliefs and physical symptoms.
